Slide the vent on the crown of your helmet open with your thumb. Look at what is actually behind it: a moulded plastic channel, and if you are lucky, a coarse mesh screen sized to stop a wasp. That is the entire air-handling system of your helmet. No standard motorcycle helmet on sale — open-face or full-face — contains an air filter. The vents that feel like they are doing something are moving unfiltered air across your face to clear your visor and shed heat, and they pass whatever is outside straight through to your nose and mouth.

Do motorcycle helmets have air filters? The short answer
No. A helmet sold for impact protection contains no air filtration stage of any kind. Its vents are apertures with ducting behind them, designed to manage fogging and heat by moving outside air across your face. Whatever is in that air — combustion particles, brake dust, exhaust gases — arrives unaltered.
The confusion is understandable, because helmets do contain things that look like filters. The mesh grille behind a chin vent and the comfort liner around your cheeks will stop insects, grit and leaves. That is coarse-debris capture, and it is not the same category of object as a filter rated to capture fine particulate.
It is worth hearing this from someone selling a filtering helmet rather than from us. Tanguy Uzel, the CEO of Spanish helmet startup Zyon, put the gap plainly when explaining why he built one: "Cars, trucks, and buses all have air filters, but on motorcycles there is no solution." (MCN, September 2025)
That matters because the exposure is not theoretical. Measured across commuting modes in Ho Chi Minh City — a city where the motorcycle is the transport system — motorcyclists were exposed to the highest particulate concentrations of any group studied, ahead of both bus and car commuters (ScienceDirect). The same pattern shows up in Hanoi, where motorcyclists recorded much higher black-carbon exposure than other commuters (ScienceDirect). The mode with the worst air is the one with no filter in it.
Why isn't there a filter in your helmet?
Not laziness. It is a genuinely hard engineering problem, and it is worth understanding, because the reason explains what does and doesn't work as a fix.
A filter needs a sealed path. Filtration only means anything if all the air reaching your face has been through the medium. A helmet is not a sealed volume — it has a large open aperture at the bottom, a gap around the visor, and vents on the crown. Put filter media across one vent and you have added resistance to one of several routes. Air does what air always does and takes the easiest one. You have filtered a fraction of the flow and left the rest untouched.
A filter is a pressure drop, and a vent has no pressure to spare. Passive helmet vents are driven by ram air — your forward motion pushes air through them. That flow is already modest at 30 km/h and effectively zero at a red light, which is exactly where traffic exposure peaks. Filter media resists flow by design. Add it to a passive vent and you convert a weak airflow into almost no airflow. This is why no passive filtered helmet works, and why both filtering helmets on the market add a powered fan instead.
Grade is not a yes/no property. "Has a filter" tells you nothing without the rating. AAA rates a standard car cabin filter at about 98% efficiency in the 5–100 micron range, against 99.97% at 0.3 microns for a premium HEPA cabin filter (AAA Automotive). PM2.5 is by definition 2.5 microns and below — under the coarse filter's design range. A mesh that stops bugs and a medium that captures combustion particles are different objects that happen to share a word. Finally, packaging. Media area, a blower, a battery and ducting all have to fit inside a shell whose geometry is fixed by impact certification. That constraint is real, and it is the main reason the helmets that manage it cost several times what a normal helmet costs.

Which motorcycle helmets actually do have air filters?
Two production helmets genuinely filter, and both deserve credit for solving a hard problem. Neither is a mainstream lid.
Shellios Puros (India, debuted 2022). The filtration is the real thing: an H13-grade HEPA element rated to EN 1822 — H13 and H14 are the highest achievable grades — paired with a brushless DC blower fan that pushes filtered air to the rider's face, a Li-ion battery, and a Bluetooth app that tells you when the helmet needs cleaning. Shellios claims it reduces exposure to toxic pollutants by up to 80% (Visordown; Green Car Congress). It launched at ₹4,500 in 2022, which made it by far the most accessible option at the time.
Zyon (Spain, deliveries from mid-2026). Zyon builds the filter into the chin guard as a patented four-layer cartridge: a first layer for water, insects and large particles; a second for fine particles, dust and allergens; a third of activated carbon to absorb harmful gases; and a Spunbond fabric layer protecting the carbon (New Atlas). MCN reports the system filters more than 80% of fine particles. Note that Zyon does not claim a HEPA rating — the carbon layer is the interesting part, because gases are exactly what particulate filters miss. Pricing has been reported at €720 pre-order rising to €799 on release (MCN, September 2025).
What each option claims to filter
Each maker's own published claim, side by side — not a common test
Read this before comparing the bars. These are each manufacturer's own published claim, and they are not measured against a common test standard — Shellios states a reduction in exposure to toxic pollutants, Zyon states a share of fine particles, and our figure is media capture efficiency for PM2.5. They are not directly interchangeable, and we are not presenting them as a like-for-like test result. The one unambiguous row is the first: a standard helmet has no filtration stage at all.

Will filtered helmets become standard equipment?
Probably not this decade, and the arithmetic is worth seeing.
Filtering helmets sit inside the broader smart-helmet category, which is forecast to grow from US$456.97 million in 2023 to US$1,294.42 million by 2031, a 13.9% compound annual growth rate (SkyQuest). Against that, global two-wheeler sales ran to roughly 55 million units between January and October 2025 alone, more than half of them in China and India, in a market growing at 6.63% a year to 2031 (Mordor Intelligence).
Put those together. Even on the generous assumption that the entire smart-helmet market in 2031 consisted of filtering helmets at an average of US$300 each — an illustrative figure, not a sourced one — that is about 4.3 million units a year against a market selling upwards of 55 million two-wheelers annually. Under 8%. The real share will be far lower, because most smart helmets sell on communications and crash detection rather than filtration.
This is a synthesised projection, not a published forecast. The inputs are sourced; the combination and the US$300 assumption are ours. But the conclusion is robust to the assumption being wrong by a wide margin: on current trajectories, the overwhelming majority of riders in 2031 will still buy a helmet with no filtration in it. Built-in filtration is not on a path to becoming standard equipment. Which means for almost everyone, the realistic route to filtered air is something that fits the helmet they already own.

Yes — the Zyon is a modular full-face design with the filter cartridge in the chin guard, and the Shellios Puros is a full-face helmet with the filter mounted at the rear. Both use a powered fan. Beyond those, full-face helmets from mainstream manufacturers do not include filtration.
Does a clip-on helmet air purifier work?
It can, provided it does the two things a helmet vent cannot: supply its own pressure with a fan, and deliver filtered air into your breathing zone rather than into the shell generally. The physics is the same as for a built-in system — the difference is only whether the fan and media live inside the shell or attach to it. Check the filter grade, not just the presence of a filter.
Will a face mask under my helmet do the same job?
It helps, and it is not the same. In the Ho Chi Minh City commuter study, a facemask worn while riding consistently reduced in-transit exposure, cutting PM2.5 by roughly 33–43%, with surgical masks outperforming cloth (ScienceDirect). That is a real reduction from a cheap intervention. It is also well short of what filtered air delivered to your face achieves, and masks get uncomfortable fast in heat. Ready to breathe cleaner on every ride?
The constraint in all of this is that a filter needs airflow a passive vent does not have, and space a certified shell will not give up.
