Is the Air Actually Getting Worse, or Am I Imagining It?

The honest answer is more interesting than "it's all getting worse." Jakarta's annual US AQI went 83 (2020), 80 (2021), 98 (2022), 101 (2023, the peak), 90 (2024), 74 (2025). So the yearly average has eased since 2023.

But that headline number hides the rider's real problem. Does My Motorcycle Helmet Protect Me From Air Pollution?

No, and it's worth understanding why, because the reason is physics, not brand.

Do Riders Really Breathe Worse Air Than Car Drivers?

Yes, even though it feels backwards. The open rider looks like they're getting fresh air while the car sits sealed in traffic. The measurements say otherwise: riders inhale higher concentrations of ultrafine particles, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide than the drivers of the cars they filter between.

Will Rider Air Quality Get Better by 2031?

Here's the counter-trend worth knowing. Even as annual AQI averages ease in some cities, the number of riders exposed on peak days keeps climbing. Southeast Asia's two-wheeler market is growing at roughly 3% a year through 2030, faster in some markets, with Thailand near 5% and Vietnam's electric two-wheelers compounding around 20%.
