Four Years, Two Answers: How the Filtering Helmet Split Into Two Products

The filtering helmet did not converge on one design. It forked, and the fork is the story.

The first branch rebuilds the helmet around the filter. Shellios Puros arrived in India in 2022 at ₹4,500 (roughly £48), with an H13-grade HEPA filter mounted at the rear of the shell and a fan circulating filtered air to the rider's face, running off an in-built battery. It is claimed to reduce exposure to toxic pollutants by up to 80 percent, comes in medium (58 cm) and large, and is sold only in India (Visordown).

Three years later, Spain's Zyon took the same branch upmarket. Pre-orders opened at €720 (£627), rising to €799 (£696) on release, for a modular helmet with a four-layer cartridge in the chin bar — outer mesh for water and large particles, an electrostatic sheet for fine particulates, an activated carbon layer for gases, and a protective final layer. MCN reports lab testing showing the system filters more than 80% of fine particles, on a rechargeable battery lasting up to 18 hours, with replacement filters sold on subscription. Production was set for late 2025, with deliveries from mid-2026 — which is now (MCN). New Atlas reported the project had passed 4,000 pre-orders of a US$935 kit (New Atlas).

The second branch adds the filter to the helmet you already own. It gets far less coverage, because there is no launch event for a thing that clamps onto hardware you bought two years ago.

Four years in, a rider standing at that fork has had no map. Every article reviews a product. Almost none answer the question the rider actually has.

Why a Helmet and a Filter Wear Out on Different Clocks

This is the argument the whole decision turns on, and it is an engineering argument rather than a shopping one.

Fit is the safety variable, and it is not transferable. A helmet protects you in a crash only if it fits your head. Buying a filtering helmet means accepting that shell, that internal shape, that retention system. If it does not fit your head shape properly, you have traded impact protection for air quality — and impact protection is the reason the helmet exists. A retrofit changes nothing about the helmet that already fits.

Three components, three clocks, bonded into one purchase. The EPS liner degrades on a multi-year schedule. A fan-and-battery module is consumer electronics on a shorter one. Both built-in helmets publish a figure around 80%. That is a system number — it already includes their own leak paths, seal quality and airflow design. It is not a filter grade. A media rating such as H11 ≥95% on PM2.5 describes the filter material alone, tested on its own. The two numbers measure different things and cannot be ranked against each other. A retrofit's system figure depends on its own seal, exactly as a built-in helmet's does. The honest counterpoint. A retrofit adds mass and hardware to a certified helmet, and any modification to a helmet can in principle affect its certification. That is a real cost of the retrofit branch, and any comparison that only lists the other side's weaknesses is an advert rather than an analysis.

Run the arithmetic on the sourced Indian figures and the 2031 market is 1.64× the 2025 figure (612.32 ÷ 373.25). That is real growth. But it is growth in new helmet purchases.

Here is the synthesis, flagged as synthesis: built-in filtration can only ever reach a rider at the moment they buy a new helmet. Retrofit filtration addresses every helmet already on a shelf. Even after six years of compounding growth, the built-in branch reaches the minority replacing a helmet, not the majority still wearing one. Helmets are replaced on a multi-year cycle; air quality is a problem riders have this week.

And it is this week.
