Take a used filter out of a helmet unit and set it next to a new one. The new one is white. The other is grey across its whole face, darker at the pleat tips, and it weighs more than it did. That extra weight is the point: on 29 March 2026 Chiang Mai recorded 188 µg/m³ of PM2.5, an AQI of 263, and the title of most polluted city on earth (IQAir). Today the same city reads AQI 35, "Good." Here is what nobody writing about Chiang Mai motorcycle air pollution tells you: a filter's life is spent by the mass it captures, not by the calendar — so the filter that carried you through March is already most of the way used up, and August is the only month you can do anything about it.

Six years of whiplash: how Chiang Mai's average hides its worst day
Chiang Mai's annual air quality is genuinely improving, and that is the most misleading fact about the city.
The annual US AQI runs 63 in 2020, 77 in 2021, 74 in 2022, 97 in 2023, 91 in 2024 and 74 in 2025 (aqi.in). In PM2.5 terms the annual mean dropped from 26.4 µg/m³ in 2024 to 18.2 µg/m³ in 2025. On paper that is a city getting cleaner.
Then March 2026 arrived. Chiang Mai took the world's-most-polluted title repeatedly through the month, hit 188 µg/m³ and AQI 263 on 29 March, and was still at AQI 231 on 2 April. Some districts went past 300 µg/m³. On 4 April 2026 the Ministry of Interior declared Chiang Mai, Lamphun and Phayao emergency disaster zones, along with Pai and Mae Sariang in Mae Hong Son (2026 Chiang Mai Smog; Open).
Both things are true at once. The annual number fell and the peak set a record, because an annual mean is the average of two different cities: one that roughly meets guidelines for nine months, and one that declares a disaster for six weeks. Riders are never exposed to an average. They are exposed to whichever city they woke up in.
The measured amplitude is stark, and it reaches indoors. A sampling campaign across 17 houses in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, published in Heliyon in 2025, found mean indoor PM2.5 in Chiang Mai of 106.80 µg/m³ during haze episodes against 5.52 µg/m³ in non-haze periods (Kliengchuay et al.) — roughly nineteen times the load, inside a house. The same study put Chiang Mai's indoor-to-outdoor PM2.5 ratio at 0.91 during haze, meaning indoor air was tracking outdoor air closely. A rider is on the wrong side of that ratio entirely.
And right now, in late August, after the monsoon, Chiang Mai reads AQI 35: "Good." That is not a footnote. It is the whole reason to write this in August.

Your vents don't have a season. Your filter does.
Passive helmet ventilation is ram-air. The vent geometry in your helmet is identical in August and in March, and the only variable is what the weather puts through it. A rider relying on vents has no control system — just exposure.
Terrain makes that worse here than in most SEA cities. Chiang Mai sits in a mountain basin, and during burning season an inversion caps the smoke into a shallow, dense layer. A rider's breathing zone sits inside that layer, not above it. It is why this city's peaks are sharper than its lowland neighbours'.
But the mechanism that actually catches people out is the filter itself.
A filter has a finite dust-holding capacity, and it is spent by mass. Media captures particles by trapping them in the fibre matrix; every particle it holds is capacity it no longer has. Run a filter through weeks at 100–300 µg/m³ and it absorbs in that stretch what a clean-season filter absorbs across many months. "I've still got last year's filter" is a statement about the calendar. The filter does not use a calendar.
As the medium loads, its pressure drop rises — and rising pressure drop is what kills airflow. A loaded filter is harder to pull air through. A passive vent has no way to compensate at all. A fan-driven system fights the rising resistance and volumetric flow falls off. Either way the protection degrades on precisely the days the air is worst, because those are the days that did the loading. The failure is back-loaded onto the peak.
That is the part no burning-season guide covers. Every one of them says wear a mask. None says the mask you wore last March is the reason you are unprotected next March.
Why filter protection fails on the worst days, not the first ones
The same filter, across one burning season
There is a behavioural half to this too. Protection gets bought in the March panic, goes unused by June and is forgotten by August. The trough is when the discipline dies — and the trough is also the only time the gear is in stock and nobody is panic-buying it.
2031: the average comes down, the spike doesn't
Thailand is legislating. The House of Representatives passed the Clean Air Management Bill 309 votes to nil at third reading in October 2025 (Nation Thailand). On 5 May 2026 the Cabinet backed it among 31 laws to proceed (Khaosod English), and on 15 May 2026 Parliament voted to revive review of 34 Cabinet bills including this one (LiCAS.news). On 11 July 2026 the Senate completed its review and returned the amended bill to the House, having removed a proposed deposit-refund mechanism. What remains is House consideration of the Senate's amendments, royal assent, publication in the Royal Gazette, and then force 120 days after publication (Clean Air Bill (Thailand)).
Here is our reading of what that means for a rider, and we want to be explicit that this next paragraph is Easi Breezi's own synthesis — no government or institution has published a rider-level or amplitude-specific forecast for Chiang Mai.
Clean-air legislation improves the average faster than it improves the worst day. The Act's instruments — polluter accountability, agricultural-burning control, transboundary provisions — act on precisely the sources that set the annual mean, and that mean is already falling: 26.4 µg/m³ in 2024 to 18.2 µg/m³ in 2025. Grant the Act full effect and an annual mean at or below roughly 15 µg/m³ by 2031 is a reasonable reading. But the March peak is set by fire weather, upwind cross-border burning and basin inversion, and a domestic statute reaches none of those quickly or completely. The evidence is already on the table: 2026 produced the worst peak on record while the annual mean was coming down.
So the plausible 2031 picture is a lower average with substantially intact March peaks. Amplitude widens rather than narrows. A Chiang Mai rider in 2031 plausibly still faces multi-week stretches above 100 µg/m³ inside a city whose headline number reads moderate. Riders are only ever exposed to the worst day, and the worst day is the number legislation moves last.
Active induction, and the service interval nobody mentions
Passive vents fail because they need road speed and cannot respond when the air gets worse. One thing we will not claim: H11 media is particulate only. Biomass smoke carries a substantial gas-phase fraction, and a particulate filter does not remove it. When is burning season in Chiang Mai?
The worst air is concentrated in the first months of the year, running through roughly February to April. In 2026 the peak fell on 29 March at 188 µg/m³, the emergency disaster declarations came on 4 April, and conditions cleared with the monsoon — Chiang Mai reads AQI 35 in late August.
Can you wash air purifier filters?
Not HEPA-grade media, and this is the single most expensive misconception in filtration. Washing a pleated HEPA medium wets and distorts the fibre matrix that does the capturing, and it does not release the mass already embedded in it. A filter designed to be replaced is designed to be replaced. Treat it as a consumable, not a cleanable part.
Do motorcycle helmets have air filters?
Standard helmets do not. Helmet vents are ram-air openings sized for cooling, and neither the vent mesh nor the comfort foam behind it was designed to capture anything. PM2.5 particles are 2.5 microns and smaller and pass straight through. Filtration has to be added as a system — we go through this in detail in our helmet filter FAQ.
How do I know when my filter needs replacing?
Judge it by what it has been through, not by how long you have owned it. A filter that rode through a burning season has captured far more mass than one that rode through the monsoon, and a visibly loaded, darkened medium is a filter that is both spent and harder to pull air through. We do not publish a fixed kilometre or hour interval, because we have not tested one — and inventing a number would be worse than saying that plainly.
