You can taste it at the lights. The bike in front of you goes soft at the edges, the shophouse on the far corner is a grey suggestion, and the inside of your visor smells faintly of a bonfire that nobody lit nearby. On 11 August 2026, IQAir ranked Kuching the most polluted major city in the world, at a US AQI of 171. Seven months earlier, the same company's annual data named Kuching Malaysia's cleanest city. Both numbers are correct. That is the problem, and no one has explained it to the people stuck in it with their vents open.

What does the haze actually mean for Malaysia's motorcycle riders?
It means the number you check before you ride is answering a different question than the one you asked. An annual city average tells you where to buy a house. A 24-hour index tells a health ministry whether to close schools. Neither was built to tell a rider what they will inhale between Bandar Kuching and the office at 8am on a Tuesday in August. On the morning of 11 August 2026, six of the thirty most polluted major cities in the world were in Southeast Asia — Kuching first, Kuala Lumpur third, Jakarta sixth, Medan fourteenth, Singapore twentieth and Hanoi twenty-fifth (IQAir). Riders in every one of those cities were making that decision with the wrong instrument.
How does a clean-air city end up top of the world's dirtiest list?
Because both facts are averages of different windows, and the haze is an episode.
In IQAir's 2025 annual data, Kuching scored 48 — the cleanest city in Malaysia, against Klang in Selangor at 78, with a national average PM2.5 of 16 µg/m³ (IQAir Malaysia). Kuching genuinely does have good air for most of the year. Then the dry season arrives, the wind turns, and the annual average becomes irrelevant to the week you are actually living in.
That week is here. On 9 August 2026, six areas in Sarawak recorded unhealthy API readings — Serian 171, Samarahan 156, Bintulu 155, Kuching 155, Samalaju 153 and Sri Aman 146 — with Johan Setia in Selangor at 151 (The Straits Times). By noon on 10 August, Serian had climbed to 182 (SCMP). By 11 August, eleven Sarawak areas were in the unhealthy band (Malay Mail).

Why can't the API tell you what you're breathing on a bike?
Because of three design choices, none of which is a flaw — they are just the wrong resolution for a commute.
The API is a maximum, not a mixture. Malaysia's Air Pollutant Index is the highest of six pollutant sub-indices: SO₂, NO₂, O₃, CO, PM10 and PM2.5 (Malaysia4U). The headline number tells you which pollutant is worst, not the blend going through your vents.
The PM2.5 sub-index runs on a 24-hour average. A rolling daily mean cannot, by construction, show you a rush hour. A filthy morning and a clean 3am average out to a figure that describes neither. This is a well-known property of daily-averaged indices generally, not a Malaysian quirk (NC State).
The bands are 100 points wide. Malaysia grades 0–50 good, 51–100 moderate, 101–200 unhealthy, 201–300 very unhealthy. Serian at 171 and Serian at 182 both read as "unhealthy". A rider deciding by the label cannot see a move that size.
Notice what none of the three measures: you. Every instrument above reports ambient concentration at a fixed monitoring station. What reaches your lungs is concentration multiplied by how hard you are breathing, multiplied by how long you are out in it.
Why a stationary rider is the worst case
Dose is the product of all three. The index only ever gives you the first one, and it gives it to you smoothed over a day. This is a different failure from the one we covered in why your air quality app is lying to you on a motorcycle — that was about where the sensor sits and how far behind real time it runs. This is about the averaging window and the width of the band, which stay wrong even when the sensor is perfect and instantaneous.
There is one number worth holding onto. Malaysia's 2020 ambient standard sets PM2.5 at 35 µg/m³ over 24 hours and 15 µg/m³ annually — and that annual figure is three times the WHO 2021 guideline of 5 µg/m³ (Malaysia4U; the 24-hour standard is corroborated in Abdullah et al., 2020). The bar a "good" Malaysian year clears is already well above what the WHO considers safe.
What does 2031 look like for riders?
Here is the honest version, and it is a structural projection rather than a numeric one — flagged as synthesised, because the data does not support a number.

That is a two-point comparison between two years, not a trend line, and compounding it forward to 2031 would produce an invented statistic dressed as arithmetic. So we won't.
What can be projected is the shape. El Niño does not start fires; it dries vegetation and peat so that fires spread further and smoulder longer, and most ignitions are human activity. Historically, fire emissions between 1997 and 2006 repeatedly pushed 1–11% of Southeast Asia's population above WHO interim targets during El Niño years (study on El Niño and landscape fire emissions, PMC), and the regional outlook is for hotter, drier conditions with elevated fire and transboundary haze risk (Context).
So: episode frequency and duration are the variables that are moving. The instruments riders rely on are not changing at all. That gap — between what the index says and what a rider inhales — widens every haze season, even in a city whose annual average looks fine. Kuching's did.
What can you actually control?
Not the wind, not the peat, not the averaging window. What you can control is whether the air reaching your face has been through anything on the way.

Should I just check the API before riding?
Check it, but treat it as a floor rather than a reading of your ride. It is a 24-hour average of the worst single pollutant at a fixed station, so a peak-hour commute through traffic can be considerably worse than the number suggests.
